Christian, thanks for the kind words. I wanted to engage you on your suggestion a little bit.
I think the idea of weighting on tournament size would make more sense if tournament size in MN was an evenly distributed continuum between small and large. As it stands, however, MN has 2 huge national-level tournaments and a bunch of much smaller tournaments that are all roughly the same size. In this world, weighting on tournament size is basically just "Bonus points for the Mineapple and Blake." It would also be functionally the same as removing the points-per-tournament cap: someone who goes deep in Blake or the Mineapple could get substantially more points than someone who wins Lakeville South.
Some reasons I like the per-tournament cap:
-Someone who goes deep at Blake and/or the Mineapple is already rewarded quite handsomly
-Performance at one or two tournaments can't win you the cup on it's own. One feature I like in the current system is that the "must attend 4 tournaments" rule is pretty much superfluous. You aren't going to be high enough in the standings without that level of participation.
-It gives an incentive to kids that do well at the big national tournaments to re-consider their schedule and maybe try for a run at the cup.
I also have a few other problems with tournament size weighting. It's more complicated, which has a few detrimental effects: harder for me to calculate, harder to explain to people, and harder to know how many points you got last weekend. It's not that much more complicated, but a simple ruleset is a good thing all on its own in my opinion. Also, it brings up a scenario where one team could screw over another team, intentionally or unintentionally, by pulling out of a tournament (and thus reducing the pool size).
I'm not the supreme czar in charge of the cup, however, so feel free to make your case. In fact, I'm planning on releasing .csv exports of my data as the year goes on for other people to play with, so you can run the numbers without spending all of the Valley award ceremony typing in results. :)
